How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Ring?
It's one of the first questions people ask us, often a little nervously: "How much am I supposed to spend?" Our honest answer: the right amount is the amount that feels comfortable for you. Here's how we'd think about it if you were family.
About the "months of salary" rule
You may have heard you should spend one, two or even three months' salary. That idea largely came from diamond advertising campaigns in the 20th century, not from any financial rule. There's no requirement, and starting your life together with a ring you can't afford isn't romantic. It's stressful.
Start with your real numbers
Before you look at a single ring, look at your finances:
- What can you comfortably pay in cash or within a short time?
- Are there other big goals coming soon, like a wedding, a move or a home?
- If you're considering financing, what monthly payment truly fits your budget?
Pick a number (or a range) and keep it in mind. A good jeweler will respect it.
Decide what matters most
A ring budget goes further when you know your priorities:
- Size? Consider elongated shapes like ovals and pears, which can look larger for their weight, or consider a lab-grown diamond.
- Sparkle? Put cut quality first. Our 4Cs explained simply shows why.
- Heirloom quality? You might choose a natural diamond and a classic setting.
- Her style? A ring she loves to wear every day is always the best value.
Smart ways to stretch your budget
- Shop just under "magic" weights. A 0.90-carat diamond often costs noticeably less than a 1.00-carat, and the difference is hard to see.
- Choose an eye-clean clarity instead of paying for a grade you can't see.
- Go near-colorless. G–J color often looks white, especially in yellow gold.
- Compare natural and lab-grown. Our natural vs. lab-grown guide explains the trade-offs.
- Pick the setting thoughtfully. A halo can make a center stone look bigger; a simple solitaire keeps the focus on the diamond.
- Get a grading report. It helps you compare stones fairly.
Don't forget the extras
Leave room in the budget for:
- Sales tax.
- Jewelry insurance.
- A wedding ring, if you plan to buy it at the same time.
- Any resizing or engraving.
Talk about it together
More couples than ever shop together or at least talk about budget openly. There's nothing unromantic about it. You'll both feel good knowing the ring fits your life.

Quick answers
Is it okay to spend less than "expected"? Absolutely. There's no expected amount. A thoughtfully chosen ring at any price is meaningful.
Should the setting or the diamond get more of the budget? Most people put more toward the center stone, but a beautifully made setting matters too. We'll help you find the balance.
Can I upgrade later? Many couples do, for an anniversary. Ask us how we handle upgrades.
